NORTH Devon College students are being asked to look to Barnstaple's historical buildings for inspiration in a poetry competition being launched next month. The competition, being run throughout February in conjunction with Barnstaple Town Council's renovation of the iconic Albert Memorial Clock Tower, is open to both students and staff at the college. Entries will be judged by renowned local poet Frances Corkey Thompson after the February 23 closing date. It is part of an educational outreach programme being funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund's 188,000 grant towards the repair the town's Albert Clock landmark.Educational outreach worker, Rebecca Brocklehurst said: "I'm really looking forward to reading the entries. There is so much history to the town and a wealth of beautiful and inspirational buildings. "Poetry is a great way of learning about individual meaning; finding out what one person takes from an object, a place or a structure. In this instance I think we'll learn a little more about what people value in and around the town and of course, we're also further increasing knowledge and understanding of the town's past. "Having such a talented and established poet judge the entries is the icing on the cake."The Heritage Lottery money will cover some 77 per cent of the 245,000 repair project costs and include the redevelopment of the Heritage Trail as well as an exciting programme of educational and cultural events throughout the year. The programme will feature the visits of local history specialists to various schools and community groups; local history events as part of the North Devon Festival; and a period of public consultation on the development of the Heritage Trail. For more information about the poetry competition, email Rebecca Brocklehurst at outreach.worker@barnstapletowncouncil.co.uk
