Health trust wants to create two GP rooms and a separate reception and waiting area at North Devon District Hospital’s emergency department

Plans have been lodged for a £1million refurbishment of the A and E Department at North Devon District Hospital.

The revamp will include creating two GP rooms and a separate reception and waiting area for GP patients.

The emergency department will have a new entrance, and the reception and waiting room will be refurbished.

Northern Devon Healthcare Trust has been given the money from a £100m national pot aimed at relieving the pressure on emergency care.

The application says the current entrance is confusing for patients and also means they have to make their way to the entrance through waiting ambulances.

A survey of patients found the existing reception was not very welcoming, difficult for disabled access and there was little privacy.

They also identified hard chairs, poor bathrooms and a cold waiting room as some of the other issues.

Andy Ibbs, trust director of operations and strategy said: “We are delighted to have received £1 million to improve the environment in the emergency department and to make sure our patients have a positive experience of our care.

“We already direct patients to a GP where appropriate, but having this service fully established and alongside our emergency department will help us make sure that patients receive the care they need whilst reducing the pressure on our team in the emergency department.”
