Barn fire continues into second day

A barn fire which broke out on the Hall Estate at Bishops Tawton at midday yesterday (Tuesday) has already been burning for more than 24 hours and is likely to continue through a second night.

Two barns containing 500 bales of hay and straw were well alight when firefighters reached the scene.

Two crews and a foam carrier from Barnstaple initially attended.

But after getting the outbreak under control, it had been decided that as there was no danger of it spreading elsewhere, it was better for the environment to let it burn itself out, said a fire service spokesman.

Fire crews from Barnstaple and Ilfracombe were revisiting the site from time to time and the farmer was keeping a watchful eye and would contact them if there were any changes, he said. It was likely that it would continue to burn through tonight (Wednesday).
