AN Ilfracombe author was delighted by the turn out at the launch of his first ever book on Thursday.A Doorstep Discovery - Twelve Months on the Cairn has been written by Stephen McCarthy and focuses on many hours of observation and walking the 26 acres of wood and grassland. The official launch at Ilfracombe Museum attracted more than 100 visitors and well wishers, with the result that a second print run could well be on the cards! His book chronicles the many species of plants and animals discovered on the Cairn during the course of a year, as well as tales of its history, folklore and characters."The launch exceeded all my expectations," said a pleased Steve."I was amazed to see how many people came along and would especially like to thank the museum for hosting the event."Feedback from people so far has included how much they like the descriptive style and that it reads very well."Visitors included Chris Roberts, who lived in the town for some 40 years before moving to Gloucester and following an appeal for information sent Steve a detailed letter of his memories playing on the Cairn as a child, watching the trains on the old railway line and the many characters they met.The book is now available from the museum and Ilfracombe Book Shop. Steve is already thinking about a second book, perhaps entitled "Another Doorstep Discovery..." and focussing on another familiar local landmark or area, such as Hillsborough or a section of the Tarka Trail.
