THE Mayor of Barnstaple is inviting party-goers to swap cummerbunds for commando suits at a charity ball next month.

A Chivenor Experience Day - complete with the chance to try out a Royal Marine assault course and ration pack lunch for six - is one of a number of lots being put up for auction at the event at the Barnstaple Hotel on Friday, February 5.

The ball, being organised by Cllr Jeremy Phillips to raise funds for the Samaritans and the Children's Hospice South West, will also feature casino tables and live music by Stay Lucky and Deja Blue Jazz.

Tickets are priced �28 include a three course meal and are available from Barnstaple Town Council on (01271) 373311.
