Fire fighters spent some time dealing with the fire in the hut on the old Ilfracombe railway line trail

Arson is suspected after a walking shelter on the old railway line at Ilfracombe was set alight.

Fire crews were called yesterday (Wednesday) just after 5.30pm after a member of the public reported the shelter near Kingsley Avenue was on fire.

The fire was in the roof beams of the hut and fire fighters used dry powder extinguishers to put out the flames.

They also cut away the affected beam in what was a time-consuming process.

The police have been informed. Anyone who saw anything is asked to call 101.
