Sailors from around the Bristol Channel will be making their way to Ilfracombe once again on Saturday (June 30) to compete in this year’s Ilfracombe Yacht Club Around Lundy Race.

Spectators will be able to see around 40 yachts jockeying for position as they leave the harbour at 8am and set off down channel, with the Pier, Lantern Hill and Cheyne beach the best places to view the race start.

This tough event see skippers and their crews fighting tide and weather in their endeavour to sail from Ilfracombe, around the back of Lundy Island, negotiating a difficult tidal gate, and to arrive back in Ilfracombe crossing the finishing line before the 12 hours dead line.

This year will see leading racing crews from ports around the Bristol Channel competing in event competing for class and overall awards in what is often the skippers’ favourite event.

The Ilfracombe crews will also be competing for the coveted Mason Trophy for first IYC boat across the line.
