A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for Devon and the wider South West, with the Met Office warning of possible surface water flooding and travel disruption.

The warning is in place from 5am until 11.59pm on Thursday, 5 February, and includes Dartmoor, Okehampton, Plymouth, Torbay and surrounding areas.

The Met Office said periods of rain and heavy showers could lead to difficult driving conditions, longer journey times and potential disruption to bus and train services.

There is also a small chance of flooding to homes and businesses, along with brief interruptions to power supplies.

Forecasters said rain is expected to move in from the south overnight into Thursday, becoming heavy and persistent at times, before easing briefly and returning later in the day.

Between 10mm and 20mm of rain is expected to fall widely, with some areas seeing more than 30mm.

With ground already saturated, surface water flooding is considered possible in low-lying areas.

A Met Office spokesperson said the warning reflects concerns about “the combined effect of further rainfall on already saturated ground”.

Residents are being advised to check travel plans, allow extra time for journeys and stay up to date with the latest forecasts.

The Met Office said weather warnings can change quickly and urged people to monitor conditions throughout the day.

The yellow warning has been issued due to a medium likelihood but low expected impact.
