Plymouth Argyle have today (11 November) appointed former manager Derek Adams as its new Director of Football, a move that signals a shift in momentum as the club attempts to turn around what has been an uninspiring start to the season.

Adams returns to Argyle after his previous stint as manager between 2015 and 2019, during which time he led the club to promotion to League One.

His past experience at the club and across the English and Scottish football pyramid were key factors in his appointment.

In his new role, Adams will manage the structure of the men’s first team and support existing football operations staff.

He will work alongside David Fox, Head of Football Operations, and Tom Cleverley, Head Coach, but will not be involved in the day-to-day coaching.

Club chairman Simon Hallett described the signing as “someone that has experience of tough circumstances”, saying Adams will “work closely with all areas of the men’s football department to ensure results and performances improve.”

Chief executive Paul Berne added that the Board is aware “the situation we are in is not good enough” and hopes Adams’ experience will help during a busy fixture period and the forthcoming January transfer window.

What this means for the club

Argyle are currently competing in the 2025-26 season in League One after being relegated from the Championship last season, and as of 11 November, sit 24th and rock bottom of the league.

The club find themselves in a rebuilding phase: the change of role signals a shift towards stability, strategic oversight and long-term planning rather than short-term fixes, which thus far have proved unsuccessful for the Greens.

Bringing Adams in suggests that Argyle’s hierarchy believe the immediate focus must be on improving poor performances, tightening structure and avoiding another slide.

His previous success at the club gives him credibility with supporters, and his broad experience may help in navigating the tough League One environment Argyle currently find themselves embroiled in.

Fans reacted positively to the announcement on the club’s official Facebook page.

One supporter wrote: “That’s a great appointment… really pleased he is straight in from Monday.”

Another added: “I think this can only be a good thing… Welcome back Derek!!

Looking ahead

With Adams starting in his new role on Monday (November 17), the club now heads into a critical period.

The coming months, including the January transfer window, will test how quickly his influence can be felt, with fans hoping sooner rather than later given the club’s current downward trajectory.

For Argyle supporters, the hope is that his return signals not just a return to familiar faces, but a meaningful step towards restoring the club’s upward momentum.
