LAST year was the busiest in Appledore Lifeboat's 184-year historyThe RNLI station's three lifeboats launched a total of 83 times, making it the busiest in the Bristol Channel and one of the busiest in the whole of the South West. The reasons for these emergencies were mixed and, unlike 2007, most could not be put down to holidaymakers not understanding the water or not thinking before going out. Only five call-outs were due to surfers, kite surfers and kayakers getting into difficulty.A quarter of the emergency calls were requests to help boats with engine failure, within the estuary and also out to sea. "Although the RNLI recognise that emergencies happen, they do ask owners of commercial vessels and leisure boats to use the winter to service their engines thoroughly and keep them regularly maintained,"said spokeswoman Niki Tait.
