THE Co-operative has announced the closure of its Appledore food store.

The branch will close on Saturday, May, 29 with the loss of 11 part-time and two full-time jobs, although the company says every effort will be made to redeploy staff.

A Co-operative spokeswoman said the closure decision was taken reluctantly and was due to the store's poor trading performance.

The spokeswoman emphasised that The Co-operative was committed to community retailing in the region and last year invested £17 million pounds in refitting and converting local stores to offer contemporary shopping facilities and comprehensive ranges.
