MEMORIES of a devastating loss to Hatherleigh were revived when firefighters were called to an outbreak in the thatched roof of The George Hotel in Market Street shortly before midday yesterday (Tuesday).

The 600-year-old thatched inn, an iconic feature of the village, was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve 18 months ago and is currently under reconstruction.

This time, following numerous calls from the public, fire crews were initially mobilised from Hatherleigh, Okehampton, North Tawton, Torrington, Chumleigh, Chagford and Bideford.

But most were later turned back as crews from Hatherleigh and Okehampton were able to extinguish the fire using two hose reel jets.
