A Braunton market gardener has offered to provide three acres of land to create much needed allotments in the parish.
Julian Avery owns land next to the Braunton Great Field and for 15 years was one of the main vegetable suppliers to Brian Fords in Barnstaple. When the store closed he lost a major customer and found he had a land surplus.
"Someone asked me what I was doing with it and then told me he was waiting for an allotment to come up in Braunton and told me there was a waiting list," said Mr Avery.
"I thought it would be a good idea to find out if there was enough interest to create an allotment scheme. I would probably need about 30 or more to start with, but if there was enough interest generated I'd be prepared to go ahead with it.

He said it is still early days, but each allotment tenant would likely receive something like a five year tenancy agreement and then he would review the situation after that.
Mr Avery runs a vegetable box business and said if allotment tenants produced any surplus veg he would be happy to buy it from them.
