SIR - We keep on hearing about the Bideford Regeneration initiative, but there seems to be a lot of talk and little action. We Bidefordians live in a market town where unfortunately the cattle market has become defunct and the pannier market has seen better days. Bideford could re-invent itself as a holiday destination but surely has a long way to go.There are various features which most self-respecting towns of any size seem to have these days which Bideford lacks but would surely benefit from.My priorities would be an entertainment complex (ie a theatre which could double up as a cinema or public hall) perhaps with an adjoining restaurant and a sports hall and swimming pool, a youth centre (though I believe this is already in hand) and a bandstand in the park. With these enhanced facilities, perhaps we could contemplate an expanded Bideford Festival in the summer.I am not sure where the money would come from in the middle of the worst recession since the Second World War, but towns smaller than Bideford have managed to get funding in the past for similar projects. In any case, it would be nice to have a vision of how we want Bideford to look when good times return. These facilities could be used by local people and visitors alike and would do much to improve the general welfare of, and amenities available to, the town and its people. I'm sure these items if included in a properly integrated plan with other projects, plus a sensible car-parking policy from the local council, would do much to revive the fortunes of Bideford.
