Bideford Bridge Rotary Club members form guard of honour at funeral of staunch supporter Mike Aitken.

Rotarians turned out in strength to give a guard of honour at the funeral of Rotarian Mike Aitken.

Mr Aitken, who died on May 3 aged 81, lived in Londonderry, Bideford, and was a member of the Bideford Bridge Rotary Club since 1991.

Hewas president of the club from 2003-4 and had served as treasurer for most of those 25 years. He was Rotary district treasurer from 1998-2003.

Mr Aitken received a Paul Harris Fellowship award in recognition of service to the club.

He was born near Bromsgrove and had a successful career in education, eventually becoming a headmaster.

He was also a member of MENSA and loved quizzes, being the key member of the BOBB's (Brains of Bideford Bridge Rotary quiz team).

Don Adams, of the Rotary Club, said Mr Aitken was 'a true gentleman who gained the respect of all who knew him.'

His funeral was held at St Mary's Church in Bideford on May 17.
