FROM diving into the icy waters of the River Torridge on New Year's Day to helping a pharmaceuticals company get its instruction leaflets clear and readable, the West Quay Fundraisers group of Appledore have again thrown themselves wholeheartedly into raising money for good causes.The group, based at the neighbouring riverside pubs The Beaver Inn and The Royal George, have also held a charity auction, Christmas bazaar, Easter fun day and a variety of draws and other pub events, including a bar top swear box.The results were distributed at their annual presentation night, with cheques totalling £8,400 being shared by 13 local causes.There was £1,500 each for the North Devon Hospice and the Children's Hospice South West, £1,000 each for North Devon Cancer Care and a local initiative to erect a granite memorial and information boards in Appledore to commemorate the historic landing and subsequent routing of Hubba the Dane.Other beneficiaries were: Bideford Bay Surf Lifesaving Club £700; Northam Lodge centre for the handicapped, Headway head injuries charity and the North Devon Animal Ambulance £500 each; Greyhound Rescue, 2nd Bideford Brownies, Remap aids for the disabled and the Sea Cadets £250 each; Aden War Veterans £200.
