See in 2011 with msuic and events at (some) venues across North Devon
THE big one this week is of course the annual New Year’s Eve bash on Friday, with the established town wide events supplemented by entertainment at individual venues.
You can read all about the major celebrations in Barnstaple and Bideford on the front page this week, but a quick recap on the entertainment: In Bideford the X Radio One Roadshow with DJ Barry Shotter and Phil Morgan will be on stage at the Quay from early evening.
Later there will be dance by Serendipity Soul with music from Samba Sol and then there will be live music with Della, performing a solo set with her customary powerful vocals.
Barnstaple begins at 9pm in the Square, with DJ James Chapple hosting followed by a special guest appearance from local singer Jemma Moore, who will be performing a mix of great party songs to ward off the chill.
Both events followed by fireworks, kisses, falling over, etc…
On the venue front, down at The Anchor Inn, Hartland, there is live music as AJ & the Underdogs help to see in the new year from 9pm. AJ will be leading the Underdogs with her strong vocals as they work through their wide repertoire of rock covers spanning several decades.
Sod ‘em & Sing Karaoke will be helping the folk of Clovelly sing in the new year at the Parish Hall this Friday, so why not go along and give him a hand? More SSK listings below.
Join Wilderland and Andy Souch at the Westleigh Inn, Instow, from 9pm until late on NYE for a night of folk music with attitude – and a tambourine or two!
Andy gives out the handy instruments to the crowd at all his gigs and by the end of the night there is a crescendo of music as he puts his own style to traditional folk classics and performs several of his own songs.
The talented Chris Stuckey Band need little introduction to the regulars of the Castle Inn at Landkey and they’re bound to win over more fans this Friday with a NYE gig from 8.30pm until late.
Virtuoso electric guitarist Chris is joined by Mike Brech on keyboards and vocals, plus Steve Sonji on bass and Graham Matthews taking care of the percussion and vocals.
It’s all original material with a powerful but skilful rock base and the guys seem to impress wherever they go.
On NYE in Barnstaple Zena’s Restaurant is having a ticket bash with The Substitute Supremes paying tribute to the heyday of that legendary group. Admission includes a sit down meal and it starts at 7pm. Call (01271) 378844 for more info.
In Braunton The White Lion Inn will have live music and entertainment both NYE and on Saturday night, weather permitting of course. At the time of going to press last Friday I’m afraid the details hadn’t been finalised but I’m told the pub will definitely be buzzing at the weekend.
A reminder in fact to check with the venues before travelling anywhere over the Christmas period, both from a weather point of view and also to ensure regular events are still taking place.
They are a bit thin on the ground this week, but Sod’ em & Sing Karaoke has taken the same approach to the weather and you can join Tom as normal tonight (Wednesday) at Qube in Bideford from 9pm for a post-Christmas, pre-NYE tonsil tuning session. Practise further tomorrow (Thur) night at Quigley’s and if hangovers permit, join him again at The Heavitree Arms on Sunday.
The Portobello Inn, Bideford, also has almost all its regulars as normal this week, kicking off tonight with Shorty’s Music Night, disco and karaoke, from 8.30pm approx. Tomorrow Open Mic Night with Paul Lewis will be going ahead as normal, with all musicians and singers welcome. There is no karaoke on Friday but Sunday’s Acoustic Afternoon is on as scheduled. From 3pm approx if I remember correctly.
Sod ‘em & Sing is also at Kelly’s Bar in Boutport Street this Monday as usual too.
As far as I know, Barnstaple Jazz Society will be back at The Old Barn, Bickington this coming Tuesday from 7.30pm, with New Orleans and Dixieland jazz from the Society Orchestra. But again, please confirm with the venue if you plan to go along.
That’s it, have a great New Year’s Eve and see you all next year!
