New date for tennis tourney

REVISED dates have been announced for the 2011 AEGON GB Pro-Series women’s tennis tournament in Barnstaple.

Following confirmation with the Lawn Tennis Association, the event will now be slightly later and take place between October 23rd and 29th.

This is to lessen any potential clashes with higher ranked WTA events taking place at the start of October, so more top 100 players will be able to attend what is now the UK’s premier womens indoor tennis tournament.

It is also hoped the new date will encourage more spectators as it now sits within the schools half term week and at a time when the North Devon area has a larger number of visitors to the area.

Colin Gibbs of the Tarka Promotion Team said: “This new slot should make life easier for everyone. It gives us more time to promote the event after the summer and August bank holidays and fits in better with the half term break in Team Tarka’s coaching programmes. With less competition from other tournaments the new dates should attract the best possible players available from the Sony Ericsson WTA tour.

“This year nine top 100 players initially chose to come and the remaining field was considerably higher in ranking than the previous years. If the tournament is supported from the start by more top 100s, less will drop out before the start of play and the standard of the event will continue to rise.”
