New ‘theatre within a theatre’ for Barnstaple

NORTH Devon Theatres has announced the launch of an exciting new performance space in Barnstaple it hopes will quickly become known for its cutting edge performances and inviting club-style ambience.

Studio@QT will be a “venue within a venue” at the Queen’s Theatre. A performance space modelled along club lines, customers will be able to enjoy drinks throughout the evening in an intimate bar area and during the performances, where all seating will be unallocated.

Inside the auditorium, a specially commissioned curtain will hang from the outer edge of the dress circle, effectively turning a large, 683 seater venue into an intimate 200 seater one, instantly more receptive to up-and-coming, small-scale studio-type performances.

Alan Giddings, Chief Executive of North Devon Theatres, said: “What we’re promoting here is a complete experience, a place to kick-back, relax and socialise while also being entertained, inspired and challenged by some great performances,”

Inside, the venue will be dressed with tables and chairs whilst mood lighting and music will also contribute to the relaxed and informal overall experience.

The venue will feature artists and companies that challenge the traditional boundaries of theatre, music, comedy and performance and also to showcase up-and-coming acts.

For its inaugural night, on Friday, November 19, Studio@QT welcomes Louise Jameson’s highly acclaimed one-woman comedy show, Pulling Faces. Followed by one of the most distinctive and engaging groups in jazz today, The Bad Plus on Sunday, November 21.

To celebrate the launch, Studio@QT will be inviting the audience to enjoy a complimentary drink after the show and share their thoughts on the experience.
