Saunton

Senior Open: Saunton professional Albert Mackenzie, in his first year of being eligible to play on the European Senior Tour, qualified for the Senior Open at Walton Heath. Looking very much at home, he achieved second place at Kingswood in Surrey with a one under par 71. In the first round at Walton Heath he had a magnificent 69, tied in fifth place and heading the likes of Tom Watson, Bernard Langer and Ian Woosnam and at one stage at the head of the leader board. Another steady round of 74 ensured Albert made the cut, alongside some of the world’s greatest players. His last two rounds of 83 and 82 were disappointing, but succeeded in putting North Devon back on the golfing map.

English Golf Captains: Two Saunton members, Brian Gilbert and John Carlo, qualified to play in the finals of the English Golf Captains at Frilford Heath. Both carded 36 points at Weston super Mare to reach the finals.

Emmerton Court: Saunton veterans completed a clean sweep in the home leg of the quarter final Emmerton Court competition with a 5 – 0 win over Elfordleigh

Portmore

Palairet Trophy: Portmore are through to finals day of the Palairet Trophy after beating Exeter 3-2 at Tiverton.

Ladies success: The ladies had success by beating Thurlstone 7-0 in torrential rain at Portmore in the Sheila Creasy bowl and also won 6 1/2 - 1/2 against Axecliff at Axecliff in the Devon League.

Hole in one: John Nash hit a hole in one on the 137yd 6th hole on the Barum Course.

Veterans Keith Braund Trophy: Forty three members took part in this qualifying Stableford competition. Despite failing to score on three holes veterans captain John Cresswell (16) won narrowly with 37 points from David Lloyd (5) on the same score. New veteran David Harman (10) came third on 35.
