More than just a ‘pub’ derby

Anchor sides go head-to-head in county cup showdown

THEY drink in the same pub after matches; but it was strictly business on the pitch as two Bideford sides went head to head in the first round of the Devon Intermediate Cup on Saturday.

Inevitable bragging rights ensured there was always going to be more at stake than a place in round two of the north area knock-out in the match between AFC Anchor and Anchor Chiefs

As Intermediate Two underdogs, the Chiefs had a point to prove against their pub friends from Intermediate One.

And so they did with a memorable 4-3 win on a slippery Rock Park pitch.

Shane Voisey scored twice in the first half and completed his hat-tick with an 88th minute winner at the end of a thrilling match.

Neil Challis also scored for the Chiefs, who will take on Barnstaple FC at home in the next round on October 8.

Barnstaple sailed through with an 8-0 win at Bradworthy.

Bratton Fleming Reserves made sure of their passage into round two by beating higher league opposition in the form of High Bickington.

Bratton went ahead on 20 minutes through Neil Tweedie only to be pegged back by a Jason Hammond strike five minutes later.

Kevin Shaddick restored the lead for the hosts on the hour mark after some excellent work by Damian Green.

Green was on target himself following a well-worked move as Bratton pulled away with 10 minutes to play.

Tweedie added a fourth two minutes later and Mark Bithell made it 5-1 with three minutes remaining.

Northside Atlantic will play Folly Gate and Inwardleigh in round two following a 4-2 win against Hatherleigh Town Reserves. Carl Armstrong scored two and there were singles for Dan Woolf and Mark Palmer.

Landkey Town hit double figures in a comprehensive 12-3 drubbing of Bridgerule, while Chulmleigh almost reached double digits with a 9-0 scoreline against Braunton Thirds.

Richard Davey scored twice for Hartland in a 3-2 defeat at home to Woolacombe & Mortehoe, while Merton needed extra-time to see off Halwill with a 3-2 win.

Fremington beat Woolsery Res 3-0 while Equalizers returned from lower league Buckland Brewer with a 4-0 win in the bag.

In the league, Daniel Wright, Jamie Prideaux and Olivier Dept scored the goals for Ilfracombe Town Thirds in a 3-1 win against Clovelly.
