Teenager ambassador will help promote a week of carnival events from Saturday, August 6 to Friday, August 12

A COMBE Martin teenager will be the face of the village’s week-long carnival celebrations.

Stephanie De’Athe, 16, has been chosen as the ambassador for this year’s carnival and will be helping to help promote the event, which starts with a grand opening at Holland’s Park at 3pm on Saturday.

Desri Dyer, from the Combe Martin Carnival Committee, said: “Our ambassador showed real passion in the local community, as well as for the carnival itself and we hope her enthusiasm will be passed on to all those who come into contact with her over the next few weeks.”

It’s the second year organisers have opened up the traditional carnival queen role, which, although very successful, was only previously open to females. This new role now means the competition is open to all.

As well as being given the prestigious title, the ambassador also receives 100 prize money. She’ll also help officially open the carnival on Saturday, as well as play a key role at some of the carnival’s other major events.

Also on Saturday, there’s wacky races and live music, while on Sunday, the raft and kayak race gets under way at 11.30am, with registration from 10.30am.

The main carnival parade begins on Wednesday at 7.30pm, with judging from 6.30pm.

On Friday, there’s a children’s pavement art competition, wheelbarrow race and parade, followed by fireworks on the beach at around 9.30pm.

A flower festival at St Peter and Vincula Church runs from 10am to 4pm throughout the week.

The carnival souvenir programme of all the events is on sale at various outlets across the village. Proceeds will go towards the cost of next year’s carnival.

There will also be further carnival updates on and on
