Market prepares for ‘big refresh’ linked to Queen’s Jubilee

North Devon Gazette

Tiverton Pannier Market is planning a major promotion to breathe new life into the historic venue and increase visitor numbers this summer, linked to The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The Big Summer Refresh centres around a special offer for traders designed to boost the number and quality of stalls in May, June and July, while stimulating interest before and after that period.

Traders will be able to book a one-off stall for just £6 or packages for as little as £4.50 per day – a huge discount on normal rates.

The centrepiece will be the Tiverton Jubilee Festival running throughout June.Â

The festival will feature community celebration events on all 12 market days on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

As well as a wider variety of stalls, visitors can look forward to live music, performances by local groups, food promotions, ice cream and more.Â

Each event is set to showcase local schools, charities, community groups, sports clubs and villages.

There are also plans to hold arts and crafts sessions where people can learn or consider learning a new skill or hobby.

The Big Summer Refresh will include the return of Electric Nights – major street food events which attracted thousands of visitors and national awards before they were put on hold by the pandemic – with dates booked in May and July.

Jim Bray, market manager, said: “We’re on a mission to revitalise the market and build on a number of successes last year, including a plethora of new traders, events and promotions and a ramping-up in our social media activity and followers.

“With a new market café set to open by the spring and hopefully an easing of the pandemic on the horizon, we sense exciting times ahead and are keen to give everyone a lift as we head into the summer.

“The Tiverton Jubilee Festival, part of The Big Summer Refresh, offers a perfect opportunity to showcase our excellent group of traders and add many more.

“In particular, we’re keen to welcome local start-up businesses and budding entrepreneurs who are looking to establish themselves, including those who have developed ideas during the pandemic.

“Visitors will be able to seek out a wide variety of local, quality, hand-made and other products that in many cases are different to what you may find elsewhere, while enjoying live music, family entertainment, food offers and much more.

“We’re keen to put the local community at the heart of the festival, celebrating all that is good about the town and nearby villages as well as The Queen’s 70 years of service.”

A host of events and activities will take place across the country to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, culminating in a four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5.
