Make 25th Ilfracombe Victorian Celebration extra special

Victorian AGM on Thursday, October 27 is looking for as many people, businesses and groups as possible to help expand the 2012 celebrations.

THE people, businesses and organisations of Ilfracombe have been called on to throw their support behind next year’s 25th anniversary Victorian Celebrations.

Organisers would like as many people as possible to come along to the AGM on Thursday, October 27 at Emmanuel Church on the seafront at 7.30pm.

A new committee was formed earlier this year following an emergency meeting and with the election of new chairman Patrick Wilson, Victorian Week was able to go ahead in June as planned.

But a committee of six can only do so much and at next week’s AGM it is hoped to gain more recruits to help expand the event and make the anniversary an extraordinary one.

They want as many people as possible to take part in the anniversary celebrations, which fall just after the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Week in June.

“Our aim is to have an extra special 25th Ilfracombe Victorian Celebration in 2012 and we would like to include as many organisations, groups, areas of the town and age groups involved,” said committee member Carol Slinn.

“We are hoping to increase events for the children, both at the weekend and also through the week, working with local schools. We would love bands, businesses, dance and gymnastics clubs or tourist attractions to dress up and join the parade whilst advertising themselves at the same time.”

A survey of 113 visitors who travelled to Ilfracombe specifically for Victorian Week found that almost all of them paid to stay in holiday accommodation, more than half at local hotels, 44 in self catering facilities, nine in holiday flats and only nine stayed with friends.

“They spend money in the local economy, most book in advance and booking numbers get a real boost for those nine to 14 days,” added Carol.

“Businesses gain from the celebrations so help us to promote Ilfracombe and help our local businesses.”

All are welcome to attend the AGM on Thursday, October 27 in Emmanuel Church at 7.30pm. Anyone unable to attend but who would like to join the 2012 celebrations or find out more about getting involved is welcome to call secretary Shirley Jones on (01271) 863630.
