Mager’s first winner

Joseph Bulmer

Lucy Mager, 13, was the latest young rider to benefit from the talents of the Prince family’s speedy Angelic, winning the Modbury Harriers 138cm race, but she had to judge her ride well to fend off the locals at Flete Park.

She had to battle hard with Bejowan’s Bouquet (Tina Smith) and Ravara Super Ted (Anna Wotton) but was ahead when it counted, winning by two lengths on the line from Bejowan’s Bouquet with Ravara Super Ted a similar distance third. It was Lucy’s first winner, after three seasons of “scrubbing around at the back on her own pony” said her mother. The diminuitive Angelic has provided countless riders with victories over the past few years, in the Wessex area.

Balfour Skipper, fourth, ran his best race since being bought from France by Paul Nicholls for Hugo Hunt who was riding for the Frost family,

Barnaby Treneer took the ride on Bronze Lawrance, another pony whom the Welch family have been generous with this eason, and had a good battle for fifth, just getting the better of his younger brother Michael on My Golden Dream.

The 148cm race stayed in local hands, Hannah Welch getting the consistent Vadlawalkover home by a length from the challenging Missoopsadaisy (Hugo Hunt) and was the first leg of a double for the Welch family, their pointer Josiah Bay winning the first point to point of the day just half an hour later.

Flareon, who, with a bit of luck, could provide Heidi Lewis with the area points championship, put in another solid performance just three lengths back in third.

Frantic Fox (Sophie Hodges) and She’s So Cool ( Chester Williams) were fourth and fifth.

The next pony racing is at Bratton Down.
