The Lions’ Club of Barnstaple has announced that the fifth annual Three Bridges Fun Run will take place on Sunday, May 15, and will be raising money for North Devon Hospice.

The popular event has grown in stature since its inception in 2007, and organisers hope to attract up to 500 entrants and raise more than 3,000 at this year’s run.

This year, the fund-raiser will be promoted by the Gazette with regular stories and pictures to keep the momentum going.

The Three Bridges Fun Run incorporates the three bridges across the river Taw in Barnstaple, and this year and was first organised to mark the opening of the town’s downstream bridge.

Event organiser Graham Kingsbury from Barnstaple Lions, said: “I am sure that the 2011 Three Bridges Fun Run will be bigger and better than ever.

“It is always a fantastic family day out, where people of all ages are encouraged to take part, so the more people who sign up, the better the event will be.

“We are particularly grateful to the North Devon Gazette for supporting this year’s event and we hope that this will lead to hundreds of local people taking part.

“Above anything else, the Three Bridges Fun Run is brilliant fund-raiser, and we hope to raise as much money as possible for North Devon Hospice because it is a cause close to the hearts of everyone in the area.

“Their care touches the lives of so many people, and that should be motivation enough for people to get involved.”

Emma Lowe, from North Devon Hospice’s fund-raising team, said: “We are touched that the Barnstaple Lions’ club have nominated North Devon Hospice as the main beneficiary of the Three Bridges Fun Run. Everyone here is incredibly grateful for their support and hope that, now the event has been launched, lots of people will come forward to take part.”

Emma added that the money raised through the event will help the hospice care for local patients, families and carers who are suffering from the impact of a life-threatening illness.

“All of our services are provided free of charge, but it costs more than 3 million a year to care in this way,” she said. “It is only due to the ongoing support of our local community that we are able to care for over 100 local people every single day. That is why events like this are so important. By signing up for the 2011 Three Bridges Fun Run, not only will you enjoy a great day out, you will be making a real difference to the lives of people in your local community. So don’t hesitate, get in touch and sign up today.”

The 5.25km fun run starts and finishes at Ladies Mile in Rock Park, Barnstaple, and really is for all the family, from 8 to 108 years old!
