Light Up a Life appeal raises £29,000 for local families this Christmas

This Christmas will be even more special for patients and families being looked after at North Devon Hospice (NDH) and Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW), after an amazing £29,000 was raised during this year’s Light Up a Life appeal.Â

The money – £25,000 for NDH and £4,000 for CHSW – will help families to be supported and make precious memories together, as they face the impact of cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.Â

The annual appeal, supported by the North Devon Gazette for the 26th consecutive year, allows local people to donate in memory of someone they love and receive a star with their name on to hang on the Christmas tree. It is a way of remembering those who are no longer with us, while also supporting the vital work of the area’s two hospices at this time of year.Â

A series of Light Up a Life services held in December also gave local people the opportunity to come together and light a candle for those they wish could be here at Christmas time.Â

Ali Hunt, from NDH, said that this year’s appeal was especially important. “Light Up a Life is very special, because it reminds us that we are not alone in missing someone at this time of year.Â

“I’d like to thank all who donated in memory of a loved one, and I hope that it brings you some comfort. Your support will help us make Christmas special for the patients we’re looking after. Whether that’s at home or on our Bedded Unit, we’ll be able to help families make precious memories together, thanks to your generosity.”Â

Ruth Morgan, from CHSW, added: “We are so grateful to everyone who supported this year’s Light Up a Life appeal and hope that it provided some comfort in such challenging times.Â

“It has been wonderful to see so many people light a virtual star in memory of a loved one on our website – every penny raised will help provide care for another family facing the most difficult of times. Whether it’s a stay at our Little Bridge House hospice or a home visit from our care team, your donations will help make a real difference to local families this Christmas.”Â
