Professor David Crystal’s talk on linguistics is open to students and public

A LEADING English language professor is holding a series of lectures in Barnstaple next month.

World-renowned linguistics expert, Professor David Crystal, will be visiting Petroc on Tuesday, February 8 to talk about the structure of language and the influence of Shakespeare on the way words are used today.

Prof Crystal, who has written more than 100 books, mainly in the field of language, is perhaps best known for his two encyclopaedias for Cambridge University Press, The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Language and The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of the English Language.

An honorary professor of linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor, he now works from his home in Holyhead as a writer, editor, lecturer, and broadcaster.

The programme of talks, taking place in Stanbury Hall from 9am-4.15pm, is open to members of the public, as well as students at Petroc and sixth-formers from other schools and colleges. The cost of the day is �10. For more information, telephone Petroc on (01271) 345291.
