BIDEFORD were beaten 3-1 by bottom side Bridgewater Town in the Zamaretto Southern League on Saturday.
Buoyed by a 1-0 Red Insure League Cup win at Truro City on Tuesday night, Bideford manager Sean Joyce would have expected his side to collect all three points from the relatively short trip to Somerset.
But it was Bridgewater, without a win in their previous six attempts this season, who took the lead seven minutes into the match at Fairfax Park.
Sean Kenny charged into the box from the left flank and planted the ball beyond the outstretched Matt Armstrong-Ford.
Defender Paul Kendall chose a good time to score his first for Bideford four minutes later, finishing from close range when the hosts failed to deal with a corner from the left.
The goal appeared to give Bideford the edge but despite good chances for Sean Downing and Nick Barker, the scores stayed that way until the 50th minute when Neil Peek popped up at the far post to connect with a free-kick and head Bridgewater in front.
Peek's jubilation turned to desperation soon after when he was given his marching orders after being shown a second yellow card.
The decision only appeared to galvanise the hosts, who made it 3-1 on the hour-mark through Carl Jones, who raced clear of the Bideford back line to round Armstrong-Ford.
Things went from bad to worse for the Robins when goalscorer Kendall was shown red for an off the ball incident, in which Bridgewater substitute Chris Young was shown a yellow card.
Bideford's preliminary round Carlsberg FA Trophy game against Andover on Saturday has been switched to Winchester after the Portway Stadium was deemed to be not ready.
The Robins will begin their defence of the Westinsure Devon St Luke's Bowl on Tuesday when they travel to Cullumpton, kick off 7.45pm.
