THE spectacle of the sixth Round Lundy Yacht Race sets off from Ilfracombe on Sunday morning.

For the first time, the race will see Ilfracombe's Mayor taking part as Councillor Bob Thompson swaps his mayoral chains for his lifejacket to take his place at the starting line.

Sailing enthusiasts may be more excited to hear that international and Around the World Vendee Globe Yachtsman Steve White will also be competing in the event, organised by Ilfracombe Yacht Club.

There are three classes and competitors will set off in staged starts from the start line off Lantern Hill at the pier from 8am.

The race has caught the attention of the Bristol Channel sailing community, with entrants coming from many ports up and down the channel.

Steve White will be competing in Class 2 of the event on board local yacht Zephyrus of Combe.

A vigorous and exhilarating day's sailing is anticipated and spectators are welcome.

Councillor Bob Thompson said: "I'm really looking forward to what has become the most significant yacht race in the Bristol Channel.

"There have been more than 50 entries this year and we're sure the atmosphere will be great for participants and spectators alike."

Yachts will be nearing the finish line off Lantern Hill anytime between 4-9pm. Spectators are welcome to cheer on the crews at the start and finish, with plenty of vantage points at the pier and on the hill.
