A total of 750 participants completed the commando challenge at North Molton Sports Club for North Devon Hospice, raising around £80,000. And it was a particular special day for one participant, who popped the question to his partner after crossing the finish line. Martin Ramsey decided to ask his partner Tracey Rooke to marry him after completing the gruelling challenge. Tracey was certainly taken aback, but said yes on the spot, much to the delighted of their two children, Bella and Matthew, and the enthusiastic onlookers. Gerard Fawcitt, from North Devon Hospices fundraising team, said: Its quite inspiring seeing so many people wade up rivers, trek through marshland, climb hills and tackle obstacles to support the hospice. Their efforts, and the money they raise, will make a real difference to those we care for. Were also delighted to have set another record with nearly 750 people signing up this year. It shows how popular Mission:Unbreakable is becoming, and we hope to grow the event even more next year. Another of those who conquered the challenge, designed by 24 Commando, was Mark Roome, partner at Devon law firm Wollen Michelmore Solicitors. The firm were the headline sponsors of this years Mission:Unbreakable following from their recent merger on October 1 with North Devon firm Toller Beattie, who have sponsored the event since its debut in 2015. Mark has taken part every year and said at the finish line: It never gets any easier. I keep thinking it will, but Im always wrong! We all really enjoyed it, but it is a genuinely tough challenge. The best thing though is tackling the course as part of a team. It certainly brings you closer having shared an experience like this. We were all motivated to take part because North Devon Hospice holds a special place in our hearts. Virtually everyone in this area knows someone whos been supported by them, so were all extremely proud to have done our bit to support the hospice. Gerard added: All-in-all, this was a massive team effort, which will hopefully raise around £80,000. Its safe to say that this will mean the world to the patients and families we care for, who are all facing the impact of a life-limiting illness.
