APPLEDORE Pilot Gig Club's annual History Race attracted eight crews on Saturday to race in sunny weather, but with a strong wind making racing conditions choppy.

Skill and power through the water was required to stop the gig boats rolling on approaching the water to the buoys - excellent training for the world championships in the Scillies next month.

Ilfracombe finished a few lengths ahead of the leading home crew to take the cup, rowing the 4.5 miles in approximately 40 minutes.

The Appledore club had its new safety rib out on the water, named The Matt Cox after young club member Matt, who made the successful grant application which made its purchase possible.

Results: 1, Raperee, Ilfracombe; 2, Whitford, Appledore; 3, Leah C, Clovelly; 4, Torridge; 5, Giggles, Torridge; 6, Verbena, Appledore; 7, Siren, Ilfracombe; 8, Kerens,Torridge
