FORMER pop star John Gaughan, a member of the 1960s group Herman's Hermits and song writer for the Drifters, was guest speaker at the inaugural dinner of the Bideford Chapter of the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International held at Tanton's Hotel.
From performing at Madison Square Gardens in New York to sleeping rough on the streets, years of chronic alcoholism, attempted suicide and serious injury, John gave a moving and sometimes humorous account of his rags to riches lifestyle in the swinging 60s.
Forty-five guests heard John tell of his rescue from deep decline after hearing for the first time that "there was a God who loved me and that I could have a personal relationship with Him."
John also entertained with some of the old Hermits' favourite songs and some of his thought-provoking new songs from his new CD Songs From My Heart.
