More misery as strugglers slip further from safety

HATHERLEIGH slipped further into danger at the bottom of the Premier Division 2nd XI table when they lost by 23 runs to fellow strugglers Paignton.

Runs were hard to come by from start to finish and Paignton would have been in deep trouble themselves without former 1st XI captains Tim Ward and Mark Grifiths getting them off the hook.

Ward made 22 and Griffiths 36 as Paignton recovered from 53 for four to 111 for six after a going over from Rob Cockwill (2-34), Nicholas Scott-Rogers (2-41) and Ross Cherrington (2-34).

The tail didn’t hang around long, which left Hatherleigh a target of 135 to win.

At 38 for six Hatherlegh were out of it. Scott-Rogers made 18, but only Cherrington managed double figures as Connor Ashworth (4-24) and Adam Williams (4-34) shot out Hatherleigh for 111.

Hatherleigh remain in the bottom two 20 points clear of Cornwod but with 14 to make up on Plympton to reach safety.

Paignton are a further four points in front.

Rob Hearn and Richard Screech both made runs as North Devon cruised to a five-wicket win over Plympton.

Tim Cooke picked up five wickets for 50 runs as Plympton cobbled together 214 for eight in 50 overs.

Sean Smith (41) and Neil Tremayne (19) gave Plympton a 60-run start, then Callum Cload (53no) and Hallam Kerton (51) added 44 for the sixth wicket.

A stand of 50 for the second wicket between Paul Heard (24) and Screech (66no) for North Devon to 129 for two in reply.

Hearn chipped in with 35 while Mart Dart (12no) and Screech added 60 unbroken to win it.

North Devon go to Paignton this Saturday while Hatherleigh are at Sidmouth.

BRAUNTON ran out of puff at Bradninch where they abandoned the chase eight wickets down with a couple of overs to go.

Chris Acton slammed 85 not out, and Syed Hussain made 32, as Bradninch reached 208 for seven. Chris Brigden took three for 63.

Jamie Matthews (90) led the Braunton reply and with Mark Johnson (29) chipping in the chase was on.

Phil Chappel (4-21) and Simon Bailey (2-29) bowled Bradninch back into contention,

Two overs out Brigden and Walid Iqbal shut up shop and took the draw at 193 for eight.

Braunton are at home to Plymouth 3rd XI on Saturday.

BIDEFORD came unstuck at Newton Abbot where lowly South Devon beat them by five wickets in the B Division.

John Weeks made 30 but no one else reached 20 as Jonty Parsons (4-28) and Paul Hooper (3-29) bowled Bideford out for 117.

Kevin Murphy (53) and Ian Shepherd (54) both hit half-centuries as South Devon coasted to their third win of the season.

BARNSTAPLE & Pilton II went all the way to Plymouth where they lost by eight wickets to PCS & Roborough.

Barum batted first and were restricted to 172-7. James Thomas (70) and James Roe (51no) were the main scorers whilst home skipper Ben Pitman, Cieran Ellard and Mark Hopkins all bagged a brace of wickets.

Mark Hamlyn then hit an unbeaten 73 as he and Andrew Hawker (52) added 80 for the unbroken third wicket to lead their side to a comfortable victory.

BOB Heaman (61) and Joe Kelly (57) led North Devon III to 199-5 at Uplyme and Lyme Regis II.

Rob Mann then claimed 4-18 as the East Devon hosts were bowled out for 111 to give North Devon victory by 88 runs.
