Great racing by North Devon gig clubs

Torridge Ladies Veterans were the top Devon crew at the Caradon Veterans Gig Championships in Saltash.

Twenty eight boats from all over the South West competed in heats around a long course in extremely warm conditions and almost all the Torridge crews won a heat.

The mixed vets crew led all the way, winning by a huge margin to take their place in the next round. Not to be outdone, the men’s crew lost their first round, but won their heat convincingly and went on to come second in the Plate race final.

The ladies vets got through their first heat in style and won their semi- final heat, despite being rammed side on by a boat that was later disqualified and went on to take fourth place in the championships.

This was all the more commendable as three members of the crew, Sandy Brown, Susie Doe and Juliette Haywood had just come from the Supervets Mixed final, where Torridge came sixth overall.

Ilfracombe Pilot Gig Club had another great weekend’s competition at the Paignton Tribute event on Saturday, with all the club’s teams having respectable finishes in a tough line up of more than 30 clubs, including world champions Falmouth.

This follows a good weekend’s rowing at the Mixed and Vets Championships at Saltash, where Ilfracombe Men’s Vets team came first in the Plate race,

Local gig clubs are now looking forward to the Torridge/Barnstaple event which takes place from Instow beach this Sunday.
