Good to hear different views

Joseph Bulmer

SIR - I was pleased to read a letter from the Secretary of the North Devon Branch Communist Party recently (No need to Slash Services, Gazette, 27th October).

While I may not have agreed with everything said, I certainly welcomed the opportunity to hear a genuinely different opinion in these difficult times.

As the 19th century philosopher and advocate of a free press, John Stuart Mill, said: “The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.” Well done Gazette!
