Recycle unwanted mobiles and printer cartridges to raise money for a new chemotherapy unit

THE team behind a 2.2million appeal for a new chemotherapy unit at Barnstaple’s North Devon District Hospital have introduced another way that people can support the campaign – and help the environment at the same time.

Unwanted mobile phones, PDAs, inkjet printer cartridges, and even laptop computers can now be recycled in return for money to help the appeal.

A collection point has been set up at the information desk in the main hospital foyer.

Meanwhile this week, the appeal’s fund-raising team invited James Bonetta of the North Devon Cancer Care Centre Trust (NDCCCT) to visit the green site adjacent to the accident and emergency centre where the proposed chemotherapy unit would be built.

It was fitting that the first daffodils of spring were opening in the same week that NDCCCT helped the 2.2million campaign blossom with a massive 250,000 contribution.

A new chemotherapy unit would replace cramped and out-dated facilities in the main hospital building and enhance patients’ experience of a wide range of treatments, including intravenous and oral chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy drugs. It would also support therapies such as blood transfusions and non-medical procedures such as post liver and lung biopsy recovery.

It would also mean that thousands of annual cancer sufferers in North Devon would be able to access local treatment in a state-of-the-art centre complete with light and spacious treatment and consulting rooms, space for nurses and other staff, private areas and storage space.

Cancer services manager, Sharon Bates, said: “We are really grateful to the North Devon Cancer Care Centre Trust for their donation to our appeal.

“The charity has supported cancer services in the hospital for many years and has long shared our ambition for a new chemotherapy unit in Barnstaple.”
