Girls’ cup finals

The North Devon Girls Football League cup finals were played at Lobb Fields in Braunton. Barnstaple U16s prevented a third successive success for Braunton by pipping them on penalties in a pulsating game that was a great advert for girls football.

Braunton’s Mia Bryant cancelled out Alice Binns’ opener to make it 1-1 at half-time and they then pushed in front through Laura Wheaton. But player-of-the-match Chelsea Hassan pounced on a loose ball toscore for Barnstaple and take the tie into extra time.

Luisa Capocci’s strike against the post nearly won it for Braunton at the death, but it was Barnstaple who held their nerve to take the trophy in a penalty shoot-out.

Favourites Holsworthy outclassed Braunton in the U14s final, but Braunton put up a good fight after going 3-0 down midway through the first half. Player- of- the- match was Holsworthy’s Amy Clark.

Braunton finally came out on top when their U12s beat Bideford 5-0 with Lucy Pugsley getting the player-of-the-match award to go with her goal. The other scorers were Phoebe Oreshko (2), Sophie Cox and Rose Sanders.
