ANDY Bennett stroked a match-turning 55 as Hatherleigh defeated North Devon by four wickets to claim their first league win of the season.

North Devon recovered from an unimpressive 130-8 to reach 201 all out, thanks to a ninth-wicket partnership of 65 between Robert Mann (39no) and Billy Curtis. Earlier, Richard Screech (26) and Max Curtis (29) where the main run getters. Ian Cockwill (3-38) and former North Devon medium-pacer Gary Chatham (2-55) did the initial damage with the ball.

Hatherleigh went off like a train, with Cockwill (35) and Mike Jones (52) posting 73 up front. Bennett and Jack Cherrington (40) knocked off most of the rest in a partnership worth 79.

BRAUNTON started the business of getting away from the bottom of the A Division 2nd XI table when they won by two wickets at fellow strugglers Sidmouth, neither side having won going into the game.

Chris Brigden (4-34) and Tom Latham (3-16) combined to bowl out Sidmouth for 128, with Jonny Briggs (33) and Nick Mansfield (32) the main run getters.

Braunton were 100-8 in reply, Mark Johnson (23) doing as well as anyone, and grateful to Chris Brigden (19no) and Latham (15no) for seeing them through to their first win of the season.

BIDEFORD drew with Yelveton in a game reduced to 25 overs a side due to bad weather.

In-form Alex Crisp (68) and Pete Macmillan (26) put on 49 for the third wicket and Ed Binns (21no) helped Crisp reach 176-4 in 23 overs when Biddy skipper Jon Weeks decided to declare early.

Yelverton were 57-2 in reply – effectively three down as Chris Cottrell had retired hurt with groin trouble – and at that point the game started to fizzle out. Andy Taylor (29) and Terry Leonard (28no) steered Yelverton towards 105-4 at the close.
