Firefighters ‘rescue’ Bideford family

BIDEFORD firefighters were hard at work last week dealing with an incident at the new Windows Direct showroom near the bottom of Torridge Hill, Bideford. Two fire crews arrived at the scene to deal with the situation, but on this occasion it was only a training exercise and there was no fire to put out.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus conducted a search and rescue operation inside the building and successfully ‘rescued’ a family of two adults and two children from the second floor offices.

Watch Commander Bruce Lesslie who co-ordinated the evening - and works for Windows Direct - said that the exercise went very well and thanked the directors of the business, Keith Anderson and Geoff Brown, for allowing their premises to be used.

He said: “We are very grateful to Windows Direct for letting us use their premises and for their support of the fire service in enabling me to remain available for duty during the day. We are reliant on the support of many local businesses in this way, so that the fire service can maintain an effective 24 hour cover for the town and surrounding areas.”
