Fightbacks bring Barnstaple wins

Barnstaple men’s water polo team assembled at the Water World pool in Newquay for the first “Go For It” tournament of the winter season.

Younger members Jack Hutchens, James Bunney, Josh Simpson and Sam Wordley all carved up Okehampton 9-1 in the first game, while Dan Tabbener, Jan Stapley, Graham Stone, Bob Bunney and Neil Stone played supportive roles in defence and mid bath.

In their second game against hosts Newquay, Barnstaple’s old fogeys in defence conceded three quick ejections in a row and despite Jack pulling the score back to 1-3 they kept getting caught on the counter as they tried to pull back and lost 1-7.

Third opponents Devonport also had a young team, bolstered by Paignton’s strong forward Steve Langman and former GB junior international Jason Queterio, both of whom netted to lead 2-0, while their Royal Navy goalkeeper Iain Mair pulled off numerous saves to deny Barnstaple.

But Barnstaple kept their heads and ate away at Devonport’s lead to end 3-2 winners.

The final game saw Barnstaple again 2-0 down against St Austell/Truro before once more coming back to win 3-2.
