FAMILIES are being invited to grab a rug, pack a hamper and head for Rock Park in Barnstaple on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Lions Club of Barnstaple, in partnership with the town council, is hosting a bumper picnic as part of National Family Week from 11.30am to 4pm.

It has been selected as one of just eight flagship picnic venues out of hundreds set to join in the event all over the country.

Families will be able to enjoy a feast of fun during the day in Rock Park.

Sea Cadets will give a field gun display and there will be face painting, children's rides, hair braiding, Punch and Judy and children's races organised by Fuderzone.

Barnstaple Town Marching Band and Barnstaple Majorettes will also perform during the event.

All being well a Sea King helicopter from RAF Chivenor will be landing in the park, giving picnickers the chance to get a close-up view of the aircraft.

Devon cream teas will be on sale, featuring scones from Ilfracombe, strawberry jam from Brendon Hill Crafts and clotted cream from Church Farm, Bittadon.

Any profits made on the day will be donated to Help for Heroes.
