Diversions in place work major six-week resurfacing work near Bratton Fleming

ESSENTIAL roadworks are due to start on the A399 near between Newtown Bridge and Bratton Fleming Four Cross Way on Monday.

The 450,000 resurfacing scheme is expected to take six weeks.

The road will be closed between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday, and a diversion will be in place via Bratton Fleming, Barnstaple, North Devon Link Road and Aller Cross. Access to properties within the closure will be maintained at all times.

Additional work will also be carried out to the gullies on the recently resurfaced road from Mockham Down Gate to Bratton Four Cross Way.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “These are major roadworks which are essential in order to bring this stretch of road up to standard and it will mean that no structural works will be required in the area for the foreseeable future.

“Every effort is being made to keep disruption to a minimum.”

Councillor Jeremy Yabsley, Devon County councillor for South Molton Rural, welcomed the repairs.

He said: “While there will be some inconvenience suffered by users these are ultimately essential works.”

Cllr Richard Edgell, county councillor for Chulmleigh and Swimbridge, added: “This is a very busy and important route that has deteriorated and I’m very pleased that these significant road repairs to the structure and surface are being carried out by Devon County Council before the winter.”

This latest scheme follows extensive work on the retaining walls from Brayford to Mockham Down Gate last year.

On completion of the resurfacing, further repairs will be carried on retaining walls near Hansons Quarry at Brayford. For the safety of the workforce, this section of the road will be closed 24-hours-a-day due to the deep excavation work required.

The road is scheduled to re-open on Friday, November 18 but under traffic light control for up to four weeks to enable the work to be completed.
