A top motor racing event is speeding towards Chivenor this summer, with the roar of finely tuned engines, the aroma of high octane fuel... and the smell of freshly cut grass - are you ready for Le Mower 2.4 Hours?
The charity event will bring you all the thrills and spills of white knuckle racing as daredevil fund-raisers climb aboard ride-on lawn mowers to compete on a specially designed course at RMB Chivenor on Saturday, August 7.
The call has gone out for teams of intrepid grass churners from North Devon and beyond to join in and sign up for the big race and help raise money for the Children's Hospice South West, plus military charities Help for Heroes and SSAFA (Soldiers Sailors and Air Force Association.)
Local councillor and teacher David Butt has organised many fund-raising exploits for the hospice, including sponsored walks, space hopping and custard pie fights - and he felt Le Mower was the next logical step!
"Le Mower will be in the same stylish vein as Le Mans, the famous French 24 hour race - but our race will be 2.4 hours, because trust me, that will be long enough for spectators and riders!" he said.
"This could be really good fun and also a successful fund-raising event - what more could we want?"
"Racing machines" must be domestic sit-on mowers that have been used to mow grass and while they can be customised, are basically in the same original state, but blades must be removed.
Teams should contain a maximum of five people, with three as nominated drivers. To find out more or to enter a team, contact David Butt on 07818 037726.
