Donald celebrates first win

Promising young jockey Donald Comer Calder, 14, from Totnes rode his first winner, Tarka, at the Axe Vale point to point pony races.

Comer Calder has been taken under the wing of the Frost family and, now Bryony Frost has opted to go point to pointing as she has reached 16 years old, he has come in for some plum rides, the family keen to take advantage of his light weight.

Tarka was keen throughout the long distance 148 race, but Comer Calder managed to cover her up behind other runners before letting her set sail for home on the straight.

Flareon (Heidi Lewis) got a great start and she kicked on, leading the field until the closing stages, just giving best to Tarka in the last half furlong. There is more to come from this mare now and she is one to watch out for as the riders start looking towards the area final in June. Petite Pois (Pippa Glanville) was a game third, not relishing the firmer ground.

The 148s had run first, to help with the flow of incoming traffic for the point to point (the course has to be completely closed for the 148 race as they complete a circuit and a half).

The 138 race saw a ding dong battle up the straight between eventual winner (Bejowan’s Bouquet) Tina Smith and Ravara Super Ted (Anna Wotton), Bejowans prevailed by half a length, with Ravara looking as though he might have got on top, if the race had been further.

It was too close for comfort for Smith. Even though this time she was riding with a new, lighter, racing saddle and racing boots, she vowed to shed an extra pair of socks next time the pair met!

Donald Comer Calder was third here on a much improved Mocking Bird, another from the Frost yard, and ride of the day came from Tyler Heard, 9, who was fourth on Ninfield Master Mink in only his third pony race.

Ninfield Millionaires Delight made all under Harry Cobden to take the 2011 Wessex Area 138cm Pony Race Final held at the Cattistock Hunt point to point at Littlewindsor, and Jack Sparrow (Hugo Hunt) got the better of a driving finish for the 148cm Final. The Devon and Cornwall finals, restricted to Devon and Cornwall area riders, will take place after racing at Umberleigh on June 18.
