Devon captains gather at Saunton

ONE hundred and forty four Devon golf club captains and past captains gathered at Saunton for the annual team jamboree.

The capacity 36 club teams of four were divided into one pair on the East course and one pair on the West course, with competitors playing a betterball Stableford.

Defending champions Dainton Park made a brave effort in what is always a tight finish, but could not quite catch the Saunton four.

Saunton captain Brian Warren, presented the prizes to: 1, Saunton 85 pts; 2, Dainton Park 83; 3, Downes Crediton 80; 4, Tavistock 77.

DICK Ford (13) won the Royal North Devon veterans’ March Stableford competition with 38 points from Peter Smith (13) on the back nine holes. Norman Cox (18) came third with 37 points. Fifty six members competed.

MARK Coles and Sue Membery took victory in round five of Torrington Golf Club’s Winter Mixed Foursomes competition and also ran out overall winners.

Torrington veterans’ Multiplication Stableford competition produced modest scores, except for winners R Griffiths (21) and J Bowers (27) who scored 87 points to finish 12 clear of the field.

Second were G Moore (15) and E Dennis (14) 75 pts and third J Hocking (11) and B Barter (15) 72 pts.
