Dan Slams 170 not out

PRIDE of place in the Farm and Cottage Holidays North Devon Cricket League goes to Dan Pickard, who slammed an unbeaten 170 for North Devon III in their 180-run win over Lynton and Lynmouth.

Rob Hearn was the other big scoring North Devon batsmen, hitting an unbeaten 116.

Not to be outdone, bowler Ross Clayton took his first five-wicket haul in senior cricket as Lynton and Lynmouth were bowled out for 160.

It was a good weekend for the Instow side as they also won on Sunday, although this was a closer affair, with a 12-run win over Barnstaple & Pilton II.

Young Clayton claimed two more wickets and John Wainwright also bagged a brace as hosts Barum were restricted to 164 -7in reply to the Instow men’s 176-8.

Barum skipper Matt Clarke top scored with an unbeaten 49 while Mark Clayton hit 60 in the North Devon innings. Nigel Rowe, Danny O’Donovan and Chris Newton, each took a couple of wickets for Barum.

Division 1 served up a win and a defeat for Braunton. They set their top flight season off to a flying start against a 10-man Sandford team, who went on to lose Matt Theedom with injury in the first half hour to further deplete them to nine men.

The game at Creedy Park witnessed an outstanding opening partnership between Andrew Paddison (127) and Harry Booker (65). The pair put on 206 for the opening wicket, enabling the visitors to an impressive 247-4.

The hosts were bundled out for 119, with Walid Iqbal claiming three wickets and both John Baglow and 15-year old Dan Crocombe bagging braces.

Braunton were brought down to earth 24 hours later when beaten at home by Bideford, who chased down a 204 run target with seven wickets still standing.

Barney Huxtable (58) and Dave Cresswell (42) scored the bulk of the Braunton runs as James Carden and Ian Hayter both bagged braces. The run chase was led superbly by Alan Withecombe with 116 no. Under-13 player Callum Mitchum took a wicket for the home side.

Filleigh were edged past the winning line by last pair Gary Henry and John Hickman as they claimed a single wicket win at home to Sandford.

Tom Sparrow (46) led the visitors to 166, with John Hickman (3-22) and Jamie Palmer (2-2) the principle wicket takers. Simon Prideaux then top scored with 44 for Filleigh as Simon Ashplant (3-48) and Ryan Glass (2-13 in eight overs) claimed the wickets.

Shobrooke Park were bundled out for a meagre 65 in just 19.4 overs in their Division 2 match at Lynton & Lynmouth, who wasted no time in knocking off the runs for the loss of three wickets.

Roger Jones (16) was the only visiting batsmen to make any sort of progress as Connor Constable sent down 3.4 overs and took 6-12. Lawrence May (22) set the run chase on the way and it was seen to a winning conclusion by Jack Osmond (14no) and Simon Jennings (6no).

Holsworthy were five wicket winners at Bideford II in Division 3.

Bideford set a target of 215-8 with John Weekes (62) and Alex Savage (23) the principle scorers as Colin Walter claimed 3-36. Holsworthy were led to victory by Dave Gerry (69) and Ryan Walter (51), with Tom Farnell (3-45) the main wicket taker for the hosts.
