The annual event returns to Barnstaple Pannier Market on September 18

An evening of stirring music awaits with North Devon Sinfonia at this year’s popular Last Night of the Proms in Barnstaple.

Taking place in the Pannier Market on Friday, September 18, the annual event on the eve of Barnstaple Carnival promises a lively and varied programme, including rousing patriotic choruses.

The concert begins at 7.30pm and the second half will continue with a diverse selection of much-loved music before building to a stirring finale featuring Jerusalem and God Save the King.

The concert is just the beginning of a weekend packed with excitement. On Saturday (September 19) Barnstaple Carnival will bring a packed programme of events from 2pm on the Strand and in the Square, followed by the carnival parade at 6pm. The celebrations will finish with a spectacular fireworks display.

Barnstaple Fair is in the town too, taking place at Seven Brethren from Wednesday, September 16.

Lee Baxendale, cultural producer at North Devon Council, said: “The Last Night of the Proms at Barnstaple Pannier Market has become a much-loved tradition, bringing people together for an evening of outstanding music in a unique setting.

“We’re delighted to welcome North Devon Sinfonia back this year and look forward to another fantastic night of community spirit and celebration.”

As the Pannier Market is an unheated venue, audiences are advised to wrap up warmly.

Tickets are £12 for adults and £5 for children and can be purchased online at https://www.ticketsource.com/panniermarket or in person from the Pannier Market office.

This concert and Barnstaple Carnival are supported by Flourishing Barnstaple, a North Devon Council initiative funded by the Cultural Development Fund and administered by Arts Council England.
