A local cause will get a funding boost when the new Tesco Extra store opens on the former Brian Ford’s site at Seven Brethren, Barnstaple, next week.

Mayor of Barnstaple Councillor Ian Roome will be the guest of honour when the brand new store is launched at 10am on Monday.

Store Manager Steve Pugh will present the Mayor with a donation towards a new chemotherapy unit at North Devon District Hospital. An appeal to raise funds for the new building will be officially launched next week in the Gazette,

Steve said: “We wanted to contribute towards the new chemotherapy unit as it is a fantastic cause and it will be greatly beneficial for the local community.”

Martin Elliott, a former Brian Ford Discount Store member of staff, will cut the ribbon to declare the new store officially open for business, and there will be champagne and orange juice for the first customers!

Steve recently took time out to receive the keys to his new store. The key handover signifies that the structural work to the store is complete and staff can start stocking the shelves.

The store will also have an olive bar, a delicatessen counter, fresh fish and meat counters, as well as a hot chicken counter. In addition, the store will have an optician, a pharmacy, phone shop, and a customer cafe.

The new store is set to open on Monday at 8am, after launch day the store will open at 6am on Mondays and will remain open 24 hours until midnight on Saturdays, and will be open from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
