No one comes forward as committee stands down at public meeting and there will be no carnival week next year unless new blood is found.
THERE will be no Combe Martin Carnival next year, after a public meeting failed to attract new members to the committee.
The outgoing committee officially stood down at the meeting on Monday after organising the week-long event for the last three years.
Carnival week has always been the main event on the village calendar and is eagerly awaited by local groups and individuals, many of whom spend months preparing their carnival floats and costumes.
The celebrations in the second week of August have seen a variety of activities, including the main parade on a Wednesday night and the smaller but no less entertaining Wheelbarrow Race parade on the Friday.
“We’re very grateful for the handful of people who attended Monday’s meeting to show their support for the carnival,†said outgoing chairman Rob Schofield.
“However, as nobody put themselves forward to pick up the reins, the carnival committee no longer exists. The former committee members and I have all enjoyed our time organising the village events and it is with sadness that there has been little interest from the community to see these continue.â€
The volunteers were also responsible for the Strawberry Fayre in June and the Halloween Parade in October, both of which will also no longer take place.
The committee’s funds will now be held in trust for a further month, in case a group of volunteers come forward at the last minute.
The outgoing members have also compiled full details of their event planning and are offering their support to anyone wishing to sit on a new committee.
But if no-one comes forward before Christmas, the funds will be split and donated to local good causes.
